Looking ahead to the 2019 multi season, the highlight is the GB International at the superb new venue in Nottingham. There are also the other iMBRA League races in Gonzaga, Stuttgart, Oudenaarde and Therdonne, plus Putten in Holland in October. The other major event is the 2019 iMBRA European Championships in Konopiska, Poland

Also running throughout the season is the MPBA National Drivers Championship. This takes on an extra significance in 2019 as the winners will gain a spot on the GB team for the iMBRA 2020 World Championships.

3.5cc – 2018 champion Dave Hole

The 3.5cc class offers the most competition, with several potential winners. If he has the motivation for 2019, then 2017 3.5 NDC winner Mark Wraight is both fast and reliable. Alongside Mark, we would consider 2018 Champion Dave Hole, Andrew Aykroyd and Dave Pillman, who has a brand new ultra-light Ikarus 2.3 which will undoubtedly be very fast, but will it be reliable?. We’d probably make Andrew the favourite this time if he goes to most of the meetings. We have also heard that Phill Fields has a 3.5 boat for 2019, but he’ll probably stick to the Internationals and maybe the 2 big domestic events. Battle for the King of Speed will probably be fought out between Dave Marles and Dave Pillman, but as usual, those last few km/h of speed usually come at the expense of occasional reliability issues. Last year, only 1 driver (Zack Humphries) managed to win more than one race.

7.5cc – 2018 champion Andrew Aykroyd

Dave Pillman will be desparate to atone for the disastrous 1-point Championship loss to Andrew Aykroyd in the final race last year. Dave knows the Championship was his for the taking with one of the best 7.5 boats we’ve seen for years, right up there with Dave Marles own Pegasus. If only Dave could match his speed with race strategy! We expect the 2019 title to be fought out between Andrew and Dave.

15cc – 2018 champion James Taylor

James Taylor may have done a clean sweep in 2018 in 15cc and 27cc, but that was less important to him than the 2018 World Championships where he came away disappointed feeling he hadn’t performed to his full capabilities. We’d normally say James was nailed-on for another 15cc title in 2019, but he is intending to do a lot of internationals so this may let in other drivers. Mark Wraight will be looking to rack up some wins with his Seljak design 15cc boat, if he can contain the red-mist that descends on him in 15cc, but stangely not in 3.5cc. Paul Adams is very fast now and could trouble the top 2.

27cc – 2018 champion James Taylor

27cc would be another win for James Taylor if he does enough races. The other contenders would be Paul Adams and Mick Pain who is ultra reliable, but not quite on the pace. Last year, James led the Championship from round 3 and was not troubled for the rest of the season.
The post 2019 Multi Season Preview first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.

The traditional end of season Prestwich Classic is now included in the 2019 Championship year and part of the qualification for the 2020 iMBRA World Championships. In addition to points towards the 2019 Championship, Prestwich Models proprietor Dave Marles offers a cash prize for the highest laps of the day.
The format of the event is one 30 minute race per class, with a handicap system to ensure that the 3.5cc and 7.5cc boats have an equal chance of highest laps against the 15cc and 27cc boats.

Thankfully, it only seemed to rain between the races, but it was cold enough that even the Northern contingent dispensed with their shorts for the day in favour of jeans or track bottoms!
Also on offer, were some of the best trophies we have seen in UK domestic racing, so thanks to Dave Marles for the budget and Andrew Aykroyd for finding a good trophy supplier.

3.5cc
A Northern Monkey clean sweep in 3.5cc, dominating the class and producing all 10 of the fastest laps (we count the Midlands as North). Andrew Aykroyd #dominated the race from start to finish, his lightweight Ikarus 2.3 not missing a beat. When Mark Wraight saw the size of the first place trophy he was gutted he didn’t enter, although he would have been unlikely to beat Andrew today, such was his #domination. After giving Nigel Smith a lot of stick for a poor showing in Hannover, Dave Marles had to eat some humble pie this time with his magnificent score of 2 laps, even though one of these was rather suspiciously the fastest 3.5cc lap! It’s always said that they go really well just before they break!

7.5cc
Dave Marles sets the highest laps of the day and wins his own cash prize 2 years in a row! After adjustment for the handicap, Dave Marles pips James Taylor’s 27cc score by 2 laps to claim the cash prize. Dave generously gave half to his pit man Dean Lord and half to 2nd highest laps James. Another 2nd place for Robert Daniel was some consolation for a string of frustrating mechanical issues in the last few races. Dave Pillman took the 3rd podium place despite 3 stops, which would have given him the Drivers Championship title if only this race were included in the 2018 results. Lol.

15cc
Low scores in 15cc as mechanical issues and crashes result in an underwhelming 15cc race performance wise. By this time of the day, the low sun had moved into the perfect position to pretty much obscure the whole left-hand side of the course. It was nigh on impossible to see any dead boats, making the transit down the left squeaky bum time for the drivers. Usually, we would have lots of shots of spectacular crashes, but we couldn’t see a thing either, with all the highlights being too white and all the shadows too dark! Not the best time of year for boat photography.

27cc
You need to go out aggressively if you want the highest laps and James Taylor could tell he was not going to beat Dave Marles score unless he got a move on. Unfortunately, a desperate attempt to pass stubborn Paul Adams resulted in the crash that put an end to James hopes of the cash prize. This battle produced an exciting few minutes of racing, so well done to James and Paul for the entertainment factor! Mick Pain was very pleased with the performance of his new Costa design 27cc boat first time out, although a bit down on speed compared to Paul and James.
The last race of the 2018 MPBA National Endurance Drivers Championship came at the end of a busy September for our racers, especially those who also compete in the Circuit Championship, so understandably, numbers were a little on the low side. There is still one more race this year – The traditional Peterborough Prestwich Classic, but this race is now included in the 2019 Championship year and part of the qualification for the 2020 iMBRA World Championships
With James Taylor having already sealed both 15cc and 27cc titles, focus was on the 3.5cc and 7.5cc classes.

3.5cc
No podium today for Dave Hole, but a solid 4th and 22 points confirms his 2nd National Drivers Championship win. Geoff Parmenter recovered his consistency and speed to take an extremely close win by 3 seconds from Nigel Smith with Andrew Aykroyd just one lap behind in 3rd.

7.5cc
Welsh Wizard lays Waste to Watford Wonderkid!
Oh dear. Dave Pillman manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again and will now have to wait another year to try to capture his maiden National Drivers Championship.
After deductions, the gap between Championship leader Dave and 2nd placed Andrew Aykroyd was just 7 points going into this race. A 2nd place finish would do it and Dave has the fastest Pegasus Evo in the country alongside Dave Marles whilst Martin Fields is still working on his Jekyll. Having clashed with Dave Williams in Round 1, Dave needed a full run in round 2, but was not cautious enough and crashed with 7.5cc race winner Geoff Parmenter. Dave got his boat back on the water and drove like a demon to try to overtake Andrew Aykroyds 1st round score of 68, but could only manage 66 at the hooter. Andrew Aykroyd took the Drivers Championship title by 1 point. The internet was quick to react in it’s usual cruel way, our favourite being this video recorded by yours truly in April this year.

15cc
With the 15cc title already sewn up, James Taylor cruised to his 4th 15cc victory this year, having stripped and converted his T7 to straight drive by burning the candle at both ends. The boat seemed faster, but suffered from water getting in the carb intermittently. Ian Folkson offered advice on a solution to this issue and James will fit a plate to prevent water splashing up against the bulkhead before the Prestwich Classic.

27cc
2018 27cc Champion James Taylor elected not to run in the 27cc class this week, saving his boat for the Prestwich Classic – James is after the £100 cash prize 2 years in a row! Mick Pain took the win in a close fought battle with Roger Sparkes and Mike Lawson. Thanks to Mike for making the long journey down South! 1-2-3 all finished within a single lap of each other.

3.5cc Junior
Rok acquitted himself superbly in his first race, putting in a full run in heat 2 and even managing to beat his big brother Miha! Miha’s consolation is the 2018 Junior 3.5cc Drivers title, capping a great season where he also won the 3.5cc Circuit Championship, and that is not split Junior/Senior so he actually beat ALL the seniors!

As the country basked in the mini-heatwave, the MPBA 2018 Endurance National Drivers Championship was hotting up at Elmbridge. This was the last race before the iMBRA World Championships in France, so some racers had elected to save their boats whilst others were making some final adjustments and tests. Although there were a few last-minute withdrawals, the overall numbers were pretty good with 14 x 3.5cc, 9 x 7.5cc, 7 x 15cc and 5 x 27cc.

3.5cc
The first heat did not require a single rescue boat intervention. This is very unusual and no doubt contributed to the best 3 lap scores being set in Round 1. Nobody was able to improve or beat these scores in Round 2, which was interrupted by a rescue boat failure. The race was stopped and restarted, but several people pointed out that there is a possible flaw in the rules in these circumstances – A boat which has nearly completed a lap when the race is stopped will lose that lap, then has to complete another full lap on the restart. This can result in a competitor losing nearly 2 laps compared to a stoppage-free heat. Would this have changed the result today? Probably yes. Andrew Aykroyd would have had at least one more lap and this would have put him on the podium and most likely given him the win. He didn’t do himself any favours though as he missed a buoy near the end resulting in a further 1 lap penalty. Unlike International events, UK rules do not allow circling of missed buoys, a rule brought in as the UK lakes are generally smaller than continental ones, and circling boats would potentially cause an unnecessary hazard.
With the top 4 boats all with 1 lap of each other, Leon Morgan took the win in the 2nd outing of his new Falcon. Leon said this was mainly a fuel endurance test for him before the World Champs and he was much less aggressive than at the Masters last month. He did turn on the afterburners towards the end of the race though and showed the boat has the speed necessary to do well in France. Nigel Smith grabbed 2nd place, his Ikarus 2 / Nova Keep proving fast and reliable. Mark Wraight took 3rd place, having reverted to the CMB pipe on his Falcon and regained his old speed.
Dave Clay had a tough weekend, breaking his Nova and stripping a gear, allowing Dave Hole to extend his lead at the top of the 3.5cc table, although the gap is only 8 points in reality after deduction of the worst score (8 out of 9 count, but with Maidstone cancelled, this season will be best 7 out of 8)

7.5cc
Could this be Dave Pillmans first title year? He certainly has the boat to do it and with others saving their boats for the World Championships, now is his chance. However, Dave himself thinks a bit differently and is all about trying to be the fastest. What we saw in Round 1 was some incredible racing between Dave and Andrew Aykroyd with their boats inches apart. This was only ever going to end up one way and it wasn’t that long until we were treated to a spectacular crash. Dave almost made up for this by winning Round 2, but in typical fashion snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by stopping one minute from the end!
With Dave Clay not running his 7.5 boat today, a gap has now opened up at the top of the 7.5cc table with Dave Pillman and Andrew Aykroyd a few points clear albeit with worst score deductions to come (Dave Clays DNS is his worst score deduction). Dave Humphries was as usual batting away with his hands tied by the lack of power from the OS .28XZ Truggy engine and finished a creditable 3rd, 3 laps behind winner Andrew.

15cc
A surprisingly decent turn out in the 15cc class which has somewhat declined in popularity due to the extremely high cost of a competitive engine and the amount of fuel they consume. From the 4 GB Team qualifiers for France, only Sam Lincoln entered this event for the purposes of running in and testing engines. Both Sam and Gary Wraight tried as hard as they could to give James Taylor a run for his money, but another top drive from James claimed an emphatic win by 6 laps over 2nd place Gary. Can anyone stop James claiming a 9th Drivers title this year? We don’t think so, but with 120 points still to fight for in the last 3 races, anything can happen. Terry Holmes grabbed 3rd spot, but ended up with a [sg_popup id=”36″ event=”click”]broken crankcase[/sg_popup] on his CMB91.

27cc
Another walk in the park for James Taylor, finishing 9 laps up on 2nd placed Paul Adams. Realistically, only Ian Folkson can consistently compete with James in the 27cc and he was unable to attend this weekend. Steve Baxter was testing a new build for the World Championships, but this didn’t go well after the boat turned over, lost the aerial cap and flooded the radio box. Some repairs and more testing required. No Dave Marles today after a scuba dive by Dean Lord to retrieve a boat from the bottom of a lake. Terry Holmes finished 3rd, a double-podium today to maybe cheer him up for the broken 91 engine.

Looking ahead to the 2018 multi season, we have a lot to look forward to. There are the iMBRA League races in Gonzaga, Stuttgart, Haarlem and Hannover, plus a potential 2nd international in Holland at a new venue. The highlight of the season is of course the 2018 iMBRA World Championships in Egletons, France starting at the end of July where we have a strong MPBA team with every chance of being in the medals.

Also running throughout the season is the MPBA National Drivers Championship with a new (Old) venue at Bridlington which should be exciting for the 15 and 27cc boats being let’s say ‘Rather Compact’ as lakes go..
So who’s going to win what? To win the MPBA UK National Drivers Championship you need to attend all the races and be consistent. It’s no good being the fastest boat on the water if you have reliability issues. In F1, Keke Rosberg (Father of Nico) famously only won one race in his championship winning season in 1982 with Williams, but he racked up a lot of points with consistent finishing. This could be the year of the underdog, with many of the top racers wary of damage or breakages leading up to the world championships

3.5cc – 2017 champion Mark Wraight

In the 3.5cc class, 2017 iMBRA European Champion Zack Humphries is untouchable, but the NDC is not his priority – He has eyes on bigger prizes at international level. 2017 3.5 NDC winner Mark Wraight is both fast and reliable, but he is also in the world championships team which may open the door for others if he doesn’t attend all the races. Alongside Mark, we would consider Dave Hole, Geoff Parmenter and Andrew Aykroyd in with a shout and we haven’t yet seen the best of Ian Folksons Ikarus. We’d probably make Dave the favourite but Andrew can win it if he goes to most of the meetings. Battle for the King of Speed will probably be fought out between Dave Marles and Dave Pillman, but we suspect neither of them will do enough events to win the title and those last few km/h of speed usually come at the expense of occasional reliability issues. Keith Burgess also has great speed but has been thwarted by reliability in recent seasons.

7.5cc – 2017 champion Mick Szebeko

The 7.5 should be interesting this season as we have another top racer in Andrew Aykroyd joining the class. Gary Wraight will be looking to return to the podium with his 8 Ball after extensive modifications. Gary will be determined to make 2018 a success after scuppering his chances of the 2017 title by attempting major changes mid-season only for it to backfire spectacularly. Everyone is looking forward to the first glimpse of 2014 World Champion Martin Fields new self-designed 7.5. Martin will be hoping the new boat is as good or better than his superb Pegasus Evo that he sold after the GB International win. Martin will no doubt putting most effort into the internationals so he’s not really a UK title contender. In no particular order, we would say that Mick Szebeko, Gary Wraight and Andrew Aykroyd are the front runners. Julian and Ross Waumsley are also strong in 7.5 and Julian’s average of 26 points per race would have been enough to take the title last year had he competed in every event. Ross may be looking for some wins to make up for the disappointment of missing the eliminators having contracted a serious infection in 2017 which almost cost him his leg.Dave Pillmans new Pegasus Evo may give everyone a fright (Video), but will he do enough races?

15cc – 2017 champion Terry Holmes

The best 15cc boat in the UK is Phill Fields Tornado T7, but like other top racers he will be considering potential damage in a world championship year so Mark Wraight will be looking to put right the disappointment of missing out on an 8th title in 2017. Facebook users will have seen the progress of his all-new Seljak design 15cc boat. We will shortly bring you a build masterclass of this boat. However, we hear he may have to contend with James Taylor who is rumoured to be returning to the 15cc class with a new Tornado T7. James is arguably (With Zack) the best driver in the UK, so Mark will have his hands full if James gets his boat built. James/Mark 2017 champion Terry Holmes will also be a strong contender as he only had one DNF all season last year on his way to the title. 2015/2016 champion Sam Lincoln would normally be considered one of the favourites, but is almost certainly focused on the world championships. We would also back Mikey Hillstead if he can keep the consistency he showed in the latter part of 2017.

27cc – 2017 champion James Taylor

27cc is a straight fight between Ian Folkson and James Taylor in our eyes. Or CMB vs Tiger King! James average 35 points per race in last years championship was simply phenomenal and if he carries that form into 2018 he will be unstoppable. The other contenders would be Steve Baxter and Mick Pain who is ultra reliable, but not on the pace of Ian, James and Steve. All 4 are qualified for the world championships, so this may let in Terry Holmes.
The post 2018 Season Preview first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.

The weekend saw some excellent racing in changeable conditions for Round 6 of the MPBA Edndurance (Multi) National Drivers Championship.

Coming to the business end of the season with 3 to go, it’s still wide open in all classes except 3.5 where <a href-"https://www.mpba.org.uk/mark-wraight/">Mark Wraight has now established a big lead equivalent to a whole race win.

3.5cc – It’s clear that the fight for the title is being taken seriously as a few of the racers went testing on Saturday before the race. The intense rivalry between Mr #boughtnotbuilt Mark Wraight and Andrew Aykroyd continued to produce the goods with only 1 lap separating them at the end. Dave Hole completed the podium in 3rd. It now looks like the 3.5 title is Mark’s to lose. (No pressure Mark!)

7.5cc – Peterborough member Mick Szebeko took the win with his Pegasus Evo, putting him 11 points clear at the top of the table. Julian Waumsley took 2nd and climbs to 2nd spot in the table after a disappointed Gary Wraight was just edged out to 3rd having struck bottom left buoy whilst leading with only a minute or so to go! Gary is showing good consistency with his #boughtnotbuilt 8 Ball and is determined to fight for the title until the last race.

15cc – Terry Holmes extended his lead at the top of the 15cc table with the win.
27cc – James Taylor took the win with the highest laps of the day (73), making it 3 in a row and is in great form in this World Championship eliminator year. Mick Pain returned after a 2 race absence to take 3rd place.
