Dave Hole took the win today in 3.5 ahead of Dave Marles in 2nd and Dean Lord in 3rd.
Some great racing with the lead changing hand several times. Dave Hole got a good start and led until lap 9 when he was passed by Dave Marles, who went on to control the race until lap 80 when he was overtaken by his young Padawan Dean Lord after a stop. This was short-lived however, and Dave Hole retook the lead on lap 82 after Dean stopped and he went on to win the race with 97 laps.
Not too much drama in 3.5, but I did manage to capture This Video of Richard flipping in Armens wash.

A switch around for the Hillsteads saw Mikey running 7.5cc today with dad Martin running in 15cc with Mark Wraights old Tornado. Mikey got a good start and led every lap bar one until lap 58 when a stop allowed both Mick Fields and Nigel Smith to pass and relegate him to 3rd, which is how it remained until the hooter. Dave Marles put in some blistering laps with his new Drakkon, setting 9 out of 10 of the fastest laps.

An unfortunate early clash between Vladimir Getov and Dave Marles put an end to their race. Dave soldiered on but it was clear he had control problems and he brought the boat in to find a large split in the radio box had let in water, forcing him to retire after 8 laps.
Only 3 boats made it past lap 41 – James Taylor was on a mission to grab the win and £100 cash prize after a disappointing 27cc run. James set all the fastest laps, reaching a Brentwood record total of 120 laps, with Nigel Smith and Mike Holliday left for dust.

Only 3 boats ran in 27cc after several drop-outs – 2 of them didn’t bother letting anyone know they weren’t coming. James Taylor lost a lot of time after several stops due a cooling tube disconnecting and flooding the motor.
Mick Pain took the win, with James 2nd and Terry Holmes in 3rd.

Whilst there is general agreement that the ‘Best of 5’ was a good thing in determining the wildcard GB Team place, most people don’t think that the whole Drivers Championship should have also been decided this way as it detracts from the consistency required to win the title which is normally best 8 out of 9. There is no real reason why the 2 things should be linked anyway and we expect this will be debated more fully at the AGM.
Keith Burgess took the win today in 3.5 ahead of Dave Hole in 2nd. On a ‘Best of 5’ basis, Keith takes both the GB Team wildcard place and the Drivers Championship, despite Dave Hole scoring more points on the traditional 8 out of 9 system.
We had hoped for a full 12 boat 3.5 race today but 3 dropouts and an unfortunate engine breakage for Robert Daniel meant we were down to 8.

And so we come to the main event. With a coveted place in the GB Team at stake, this promised to produce fireworks. These two protagonists need very little introduction so I’ll give you a really long one.
In the red face corner, fighting out of Horsham Sussex, standing 8 feet tall (On his wallet), holder of the world record for fastest haircut and 2 time National Drivers Champion….Julian “Bee Man” Wauuuuuumsleeey.
In the green corner fighting out of Bridlington Yorkshire, standing 6 foot 2 bah’t at, pitted by the only northern lass to be constantly mardy about t’cold, former Drivers Champion and FSR-World Silver Medalist, Robert ‘Put wood int ole’ Daaaaniellllll.
Heat 1 – It’s not looking good for Julian as his boat is constantly bogging. Robert wins the heat and puts himself in pole on 71 laps after Geoff gets a minus one penalty.
Heat 2 – For the most part of the race there were only 3 boats on the water. Julian had mostly sorted the bogging and so we had a straight fight and the first round scores would almost certainly be bettered with far less traffic. Robert led the race until lap 56, when Julian managed to slip by on bottom left after a near collision. He was then able to use his marginally better straight line speed to control the race with Lauren urging dad on with words she’s thankfully not been on the receiving end of (Push!!!! Push!!!!).
So Julian takes the win, the title and the team place. Robert pushes Julian in the lake and throws his boat in on his head (That last bit is not true at all) Best Lap -Julian – 14.237

James Taylor finishes the season off with another win for a total of 5, scoring the maximum possible points to claim the GB Team place and Drivers Championship title. That’s a record 12 Drivers titles to his name, putting some distance between himself and his nearest challenger Mark Wraight on 7. Not quite so dominant today though, with Terry Holmes hot on his heels in 2nd and Mike Gelson in 3rd. This is purely the writers opinion, but the 15cc and 27cc classes are fast heavy boats that can cause a lot of damage in collisions. I do wonder whether these classes should be the correct choice (Or even permissible) choice for beginners. Best Lap – James – 13.174

James Taylor finishes the season off with another win for a total of 6, scoring the maximum possible points to claim the GB Team place and Drivers Championship title. Hang on, is there an echo in here? Nope. James dominates the 27cc class in 2019, with only a couple of rare mechanical problems, plus an inspired drive by Ian Folkson in his farewell race preventing a clean sweep. Untouchable and always assured of the GB Team spot. Mick Pain took 2nd place just 1 lap in front of Terry Holmes. Best lap – James 13.728

Back to this weekends racing at Brentwood – Numbers were fairly good – 13 x 3.5cc, 9 x 7.5cc, 11 x 15cc and 6 x 27cc. First outings of the season for Vladimir Getov’s ex-Phill Fields Tornado and Luciano Pini in 27cc.

3.5cc
Going into the weekend, Dave Clay was tied for 1st place in the championship with Andrew Aykroyd. Andrew was unable to attend this weekend, so a good chance for Dave to steal a march. Unfortunately, Dave could only manage 5th this time and was leapfrogged by Keith Burgess who has discovered reliability to go with his speed this season, with a 6th, 2nd and 1st in the first 3 races. Dave Pillman set the fastest 3.5cc lap of the day with his super-lightweight Ikarus 2.3 finally making an appearance. Dave could only manage overall 6th as a few setup and reliability issues typical with a new boat, but even more typical with Mr Pillman, put paid to his chances. 2018 3.5cc Drivers Champion Dave Hole took 2nd place 4 laps behind Keith and Richard Sewell grabbed an impressive 3rd place including the fastest 2 laps in heat 2. Next job – get those fast laps consistent.

A single 9-boat 7.5cc heat produced some of the best racing of the day, with all the boats being reliable and keeping a permanently busy course. That’s how it should be and we’ll take a step back in future before deciding to split a class as attrition can often produce boring races.

When it’s working properly, few can match Dave Pillmans Pegasus. It’s fast and stable. A Championship Winning Boat with the application of good strategy. Unfortunately, Dave’s strategy is ‘Go as fast as I can and what will be, will be.’ Commendable, but not often a winning strategy. However, it worked out for Dave today, taking the win by 1 lap from Gary Wraight, whose rejuvenated 8-Ball is getting better every race. Nigel Smith grabbed 3rd place. Dave now leads the 7.5cc Championship, 1 point ahead of Robert Daniel who did not attend today. Robert will be looking to reverse this at his home race at Bridlington on the 12th May.

We split the 15cc into 2 groups, but should have left it as one, as one by one, the racers dropped out. James Taylor maintains his 100% record with his 3rd win of the season. James must be odds-on to take the title and the first qualifying spot on the GB Team. Phill Fields ran James close with a 2nd round score of 82, just 2 shy of James’ winning 84 laps. James also took fastest lap of the day with an incredible 12.884 seconds. The first time we have seen a genuine sub-13 second lap at Brentwood. Mark Wraight took 3rd place and is slowly creeping up the table, but James’ points haul of 120 is almost double the chasing pack.

15cc Podium

27cc
Another win for James Taylor, dominating the 2 largest classes again. Could he possibly win every race this season? We wouldn’t bet against it as both his Tornados are fast and reliable. Paul Adams is close on speed, but James’ consistently low lap times are hard to beat. With Ian Folkson leaving the UK, we don’t see any genuine challenge to James’ grip on this class. Paul Adams took 2nd place, with Mick Pain grabbing 3rd

27cc Podium

3.5cc
No podium today for Dave Hole, but a solid 4th and 22 points confirms his 2nd National Drivers Championship win. Geoff Parmenter recovered his consistency and speed to take an extremely close win by 3 seconds from Nigel Smith with Andrew Aykroyd just one lap behind in 3rd.

Welsh Wizard lays Waste to Watford Wonderkid!
Oh dear. Dave Pillman manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again and will now have to wait another year to try to capture his maiden National Drivers Championship.
After deductions, the gap between Championship leader Dave and 2nd placed Andrew Aykroyd was just 7 points going into this race. A 2nd place finish would do it and Dave has the fastest Pegasus Evo in the country alongside Dave Marles whilst Martin Fields is still working on his Jekyll. Having clashed with Dave Williams in Round 1, Dave needed a full run in round 2, but was not cautious enough and crashed with 7.5cc race winner Geoff Parmenter. Dave got his boat back on the water and drove like a demon to try to overtake Andrew Aykroyds 1st round score of 68, but could only manage 66 at the hooter. Andrew Aykroyd took the Drivers Championship title by 1 point. The internet was quick to react in it’s usual cruel way, our favourite being this video recorded by yours truly in April this year.

With the 15cc title already sewn up, James Taylor cruised to his 4th 15cc victory this year, having stripped and converted his T7 to straight drive by burning the candle at both ends. The boat seemed faster, but suffered from water getting in the carb intermittently. Ian Folkson offered advice on a solution to this issue and James will fit a plate to prevent water splashing up against the bulkhead before the Prestwich Classic.

27cc
2018 27cc Champion James Taylor elected not to run in the 27cc class this week, saving his boat for the Prestwich Classic – James is after the £100 cash prize 2 years in a row! Mick Pain took the win in a close fought battle with Roger Sparkes and Mike Lawson. Thanks to Mike for making the long journey down South! 1-2-3 all finished within a single lap of each other.

3.5cc Junior
Rok acquitted himself superbly in his first race, putting in a full run in heat 2 and even managing to beat his big brother Miha! Miha’s consolation is the 2018 Junior 3.5cc Drivers title, capping a great season where he also won the 3.5cc Circuit Championship, and that is not split Junior/Senior so he actually beat ALL the seniors!

The post Brentwood NDC R3 first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.]]> A beautiful sunny day greeted the racers for round 3 of the National Drivers Championship at Brentwood on Sunday. There was some concern with the organisers as this was the first test of the new online booking in form together with preparation of the lap counting program by someone completely new. In the end these concerns were unfounded as both the booking in process and lap counting was flawless and many said it was an improvement, with a live entry list and a feature-rich heat detail page on the new MPBA Race Hub. Thanks to MPBA General Secretary Linda Buonaiuto and MPBA Webmaster Andy Coburn for making this happen. Entry numbers were good and the 15cc and 27cc classes in particular promised some exciting racing with full heats.

3.5cc – Richard Sewell arrived armed with a brand new Ikarus 2.3 along with a #dptuned O.S. engine. There was no doubt his boat was quick, but the happiest people will be the polystyrene manufacturers whose profits will soar from all the replacement buoy material that will needed after several incidents. Julian Waumsley took the win after Andrew Aykroyd mistakenly elected to sit out round 2 thinking he’d done enough laps. To compound his misery, he was beaten into 3rd place by Dave Hole, who moves to within 4 points of championship leader Dave Clay.

7.5cc – Dave Pillmans Pegasus Evo is the boat to beat this year in Martin Fields’ absence. If only Dave could have kept it upright he surely would have retained and extended his championship lead. However, he now trails Andrew Aykroyd by a single point after Andrew grabbed 3rd spot on the day and top spot in the championship. Andrew beat Dave by 9 seconds with an engine he borrowed from him for the 2nd round! Oh the irony! Dave Clay won the class with MPBA Chairman Mick Fields taking 2nd place. Dave Clay and Mick now sit 3rd and 4th in the 7.5cc championship.

15cc – With 9 boats including a newbie in one heat (Brentwood is not the biggest of lakes) this promised a drama-filled race. As it turned out, the racers were well aware of this and for the most part kept their cool to produce some great racing. Championship leader James Taylor had some trouble in testing on the Saturday when he managed to strip a metal gear in his T7. Some hasty repairs and switch to a nylon gear and James was ready to race. Mark Wraight had repaired his new Seljak boat and needed to get things right before the Haarlem International. Things were not looking that great for Mark in the first round but he found the magic bullet during the lunch break and dominated round 2 for an emphatic first win with his new boat after Phill Fields elected to sit out round 2 having completed his setup for the upcoming International.

Marks win lifted him to 4th place in the championship albeit 23 points adrift of leader Phill Fields who took 2nd on the day, and rather embarrassingly 5 points behind twin brother Gary Wraight although we doubt it will stay that way for long. Mike Holliday took 3rd place, 4 laps in front of Gary.

27cc – Another 9 boat race that produced the best racing of the day. An epic battle between James Taylor and Steve Baxter. Steve’s 27 boat is really quick and James narrowly lost out by 8 seconds after going down a prop size for round 2 to improve stability. Unfortunately the effect of this was to prevent the boat from lifting and achieving its top potential speed. Congratulations to Steve though, James is usually unbeatable in the 27cc class and was very optimistic before the race. 1st, 2nd and 3rd (Terry Holmes) were all within 1 lap.

The post 2018 Season Preview first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.]]> Looking ahead to the 2018 multi season, we have a lot to look forward to. There are the iMBRA League races in Gonzaga, Stuttgart, Haarlem and Hannover, plus a potential 2nd international in Holland at a new venue. The highlight of the season is of course the 2018 iMBRA World Championships in Egletons, France starting at the end of July where we have a strong MPBA team with every chance of being in the medals.

Also running throughout the season is the MPBA National Drivers Championship with a new (Old) venue at Bridlington which should be exciting for the 15 and 27cc boats being let’s say ‘Rather Compact’ as lakes go..
So who’s going to win what? To win the MPBA UK National Drivers Championship you need to attend all the races and be consistent. It’s no good being the fastest boat on the water if you have reliability issues. In F1, Keke Rosberg (Father of Nico) famously only won one race in his championship winning season in 1982 with Williams, but he racked up a lot of points with consistent finishing. This could be the year of the underdog, with many of the top racers wary of damage or breakages leading up to the world championships

3.5cc – 2017 champion Mark Wraight

In the 3.5cc class, 2017 iMBRA European Champion Zack Humphries is untouchable, but the NDC is not his priority – He has eyes on bigger prizes at international level. 2017 3.5 NDC winner Mark Wraight is both fast and reliable, but he is also in the world championships team which may open the door for others if he doesn’t attend all the races. Alongside Mark, we would consider Dave Hole, Geoff Parmenter and Andrew Aykroyd in with a shout and we haven’t yet seen the best of Ian Folksons Ikarus. We’d probably make Dave the favourite but Andrew can win it if he goes to most of the meetings. Battle for the King of Speed will probably be fought out between Dave Marles and Dave Pillman, but we suspect neither of them will do enough events to win the title and those last few km/h of speed usually come at the expense of occasional reliability issues. Keith Burgess also has great speed but has been thwarted by reliability in recent seasons.

7.5cc – 2017 champion Mick Szebeko

The 7.5 should be interesting this season as we have another top racer in Andrew Aykroyd joining the class. Gary Wraight will be looking to return to the podium with his 8 Ball after extensive modifications. Gary will be determined to make 2018 a success after scuppering his chances of the 2017 title by attempting major changes mid-season only for it to backfire spectacularly. Everyone is looking forward to the first glimpse of 2014 World Champion Martin Fields new self-designed 7.5. Martin will be hoping the new boat is as good or better than his superb Pegasus Evo that he sold after the GB International win. Martin will no doubt putting most effort into the internationals so he’s not really a UK title contender. In no particular order, we would say that Mick Szebeko, Gary Wraight and Andrew Aykroyd are the front runners. Julian and Ross Waumsley are also strong in 7.5 and Julian’s average of 26 points per race would have been enough to take the title last year had he competed in every event. Ross may be looking for some wins to make up for the disappointment of missing the eliminators having contracted a serious infection in 2017 which almost cost him his leg.Dave Pillmans new Pegasus Evo may give everyone a fright (Video), but will he do enough races?

15cc – 2017 champion Terry Holmes

The best 15cc boat in the UK is Phill Fields Tornado T7, but like other top racers he will be considering potential damage in a world championship year so Mark Wraight will be looking to put right the disappointment of missing out on an 8th title in 2017. Facebook users will have seen the progress of his all-new Seljak design 15cc boat. We will shortly bring you a build masterclass of this boat. However, we hear he may have to contend with James Taylor who is rumoured to be returning to the 15cc class with a new Tornado T7. James is arguably (With Zack) the best driver in the UK, so Mark will have his hands full if James gets his boat built. James/Mark 2017 champion Terry Holmes will also be a strong contender as he only had one DNF all season last year on his way to the title. 2015/2016 champion Sam Lincoln would normally be considered one of the favourites, but is almost certainly focused on the world championships. We would also back Mikey Hillstead if he can keep the consistency he showed in the latter part of 2017.

27cc – 2017 champion James Taylor

27cc is a straight fight between Ian Folkson and James Taylor in our eyes. Or CMB vs Tiger King! James average 35 points per race in last years championship was simply phenomenal and if he carries that form into 2018 he will be unstoppable. The other contenders would be Steve Baxter and Mick Pain who is ultra reliable, but not on the pace of Ian, James and Steve. All 4 are qualified for the world championships, so this may let in Terry Holmes.

The penultimate round of the Endurance National Drivers Championship was full of thrills and spills at Brentwood this weekend. With many drivers eyes on the World Championship Eliminators in 2 weeks time, numbers were down from the average entry list but there was still plenty of tight and intense racing on offer. And what a stroke of luck that the sun made an appearance for the podium pictures!

3.5cc – This continues to be the most competitive class in the UK and was the only class with the numbers for 2 heats today. Mark Wraight was looking to seal the 3.5 title and match Andy Coburn’s 2016 feat of taking the title with a race to spare. Despite only finishing in 6th place and doing pretty much everything to scupper his chances by crashing in both heats and breaking his OS engine, Mark duly took the title on countback after deduction of Dave Hole’s worst score of 4 (8 out of 9 races count). Geoff Parmenter took the win today having put in a faultless first run and electing to sit out the 2nd heat to save his boat for the eliminators.

7.5cc – Deja Vue with that man Geoff Parmenter again producing a faultless first run to take the win. Geoff appears to be in great form for the eliminators and missing a few races this season seems to have been a wise choice with his goal being qualification for the MPBA GB Team in France 2018. Gary Wraight drove a controlled race to take 2nd, and now has a great record of 3 out of 4 podium finishes with his Daniel Kleff 8 Ball. However, he will be looking for a bit more speed before the eliminators to qualify with Geoff, Julian and Ross Waumsley, Rob Daniel and Dave Marles all strong contenders. Gary now has an outside chance to overtake Mick Szebeko for the 7.5 title at the Prestwich Classic but will need a bit of luck.

15cc – Mark Wraight drove a controlled 2nd heat to take the win after a few mishaps in the first heat. With Terry Holmes only managing to place 6th with 15 points, this now puts Mark 30 points clear after the worst scores are deducted (The 8 best scores out of 9 count). Barring a disaster at the Prestwich Classic, Mark now looks nailed on for the double in 3.5 and 15cc. Paul Adams came in 2nd only half a lap behind Mark and Mikey Hillstead took 3rd after an exciting battle with Sam Lincoln in the 2nd heat.

27cc – James Taylor took the win with the highest laps of the day with his Boudicca / Tiger King combination. A great return to form with a new boat which lifts him to within 11 points of 27cc leader Mick Pain. This one is going down to the wire with James determined to prevent his number of Championship wins being equalled by Mark Wraight. Mick Pain put in his usual consistent run to take 2nd. Numbers were very low in 27cc and Paul Adams took 3rd with only 4 laps!.

The post MPBA National Drivers Championship Round 2 first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.]]> The second round of the Nationals Drivers Championship held at Brentwood MBC was a chance to gain some ground while the early leaders were missing in Gonzaga or otherwise unable to attend.
Julian Waumsley won the 3.5 class in his first appearance this season. Dave Pillman was the surprise winner in 7.5 after an unfortunate crash between favourites Geoff Parmenter and former World Champion Martin Fields. Paul Adams took the win in 15cc and Mick Pain continued to show consistency in taking the 27cc win, with Ian Folkson away in Gonzaga.
