3.5cc – 5 places to eliminate

Zack Humphries has a place and doesn’t need to eliminate. (Current World Champ & European Champ). So 6 places in total available. (5 from Egletons – Zack and Dave got in the final plus an extra place due to Zack winning the league last year is 6 in total) less the place taken by Keith as NDC winner left 5 up for grabs.
With 5 up for grab, a non-stop run would probably be enough to qualify. Phill Fields sets the benchmark in Final 1 with an impressive 80 laps which proved enough to secure him top qualifying spot. 4 out of the 5 qualifiers secured their spot with their Final 1 scores. Final 2 was very low-scoring apart from Dave Marles, who made an excellent recovery from a troublesome first round to take overall 2nd qualifying place behind Phill. Julian Waumsley took 3rd and Robert Daniel 4th. Nigel Smith took the final qualifying spot in 5th place having bought Andy Payne’s 3.5 boat after damaging his own in Putten.

7.5cc – 3 places to eliminate

With only 3 places available and 10 boats entered, we were assured of some intense racing ending with both joy and heartbreak. It brought into focus just how important the Drivers Championship was this year, with a very relieved Julian Waumsley not needing to race. Martin Fields had obviously been weighing up the odds due to the continued inconsistency of his Jekyll and took the decision to buy Evert de Ronde’s 8-Ball in Putten. A wise choice as it propelled Martin to top qualifying spot on 86 laps, 2 ahead of Nigel Smith. Dave Humphries stoic first round drive with his Ikarus and OS .28 proved enough for the final qualifying spot, leaving usual suspects Ross Waumsley, Dave Marles and an incredibly unlucky Robert Daniel rueing the missed opportunity.

15cc – 4 places to eliminate

Zack Humphries has a place and doesn’t need to eliminate (Current European Champ) so 5 places available, less the place taken by James Taylor as NDC winner left 4 places up for grabs
A dominant 98 Lap 1st round drive by Phill Fields, assured him of the team place as top qualifier. The Fields brothers had now scored a hat-trick! – top qualifiers in all 3 classes entered. Sam Lincoln managed to solve his 1st round bogging and won the second final with 83 laps to take overall 3rd qualifying spot behind Ross Waumsley , with the final spot going to Mikey Hillstead, whose aggressive driving is very entertaining to watch but could easily have cost him his place.

27cc – 3 places to eliminate

4 places available, less the place taken by James Taylor as NDC winner left 3 places up for grabs.
No qualifying race was necessary after a withdrawal meant only 3 drivers needed a place.

35cc – 1 place to eliminate

4 places available, only 3 entries so far, 1 place up for grabs

Depending on the final results of this years league Phill may end up with the wild card. Zack has won the league and Phill is currently second. If Phill remains in second place the wildcard will pass to him because Zack doesn’t need it.

Heats

Junior Luke Burgess kicked off with a Bronze in the 3.5cc Offshore, just narrowly missing out on a Silver in his first year of racing. Great job Luke!

This was followed by a Silver for MPBA Life Member Ian Folkson in the 3.5cc Senior Offshore class. Ian was just edged out by 22 time Gold Medal winner Kjell Noddeland from Norway, who is almost an unstoppable force in Hydro and Offshore.

Finally, a superb Gold / Silver double for Martin Fields and Keith Burgess in the Senior 3.5cc Hydro class.

In Endurance, Zack Humphries claimed a fantastic Gold medal in 3.5cc Endurance, confirming his status as the best in the World in 3.5cc

Why should I go?
You will get to see and meet the top racers in the world battle it out for the title of World Champion. You will be able to eat snails and frogs legs, listen to them bang on non-stop about winning the World Cup, be ignored by surly shopkeepers, stay in non-air conditioned rooms or tents and share a bathroom with a load of strangers. What more could you want?

Where is it?
Egletons is in the Correze region of France. You’re looking at an 8 hour drive from Calais. Here’s a Google Maps route finder:

What’s there?
Paris, this is not. Egletons is a sleepy French Town in a picturesque and probably very warm region of France. Think Deliverance, but with a French accent “Couiner comme un cochon”. The carp fishermen amongst you will understand this reference. That said, there are branches of Lidl (Mon-Sat) and Auchan (Mon-Sat plus Sunday mornings). There’s also a ‘Boutique’ grocery store where an organic free range apple probably costs 10 euros, a butchers if you fancy a bit of horse with your chips and a couple of pizza places that have interesting reviews. Unfortunately, the nearest McDonalds is 25km away in Ussel if you like to eat that crap or your kids are wasting away from hunger.
Also in town, you’ll find a Cinema showing repeats of old Luc Besson movies and if you are about to expire due to the excessive heat, then you can buy a fan from This Place. There are a few banks where you can use your UK card in order to get ripped off with various ‘handling charges’ if you run out of Euros. The train station, which incidentally is nowhere near the town centre, is located close to the Jehovas Witness Church if you’re in a King James mood and prefer your blood un-transfused. There’s a little flying club strip next to the lake where they also do model flying and offer lessons – If you pretend you can’t fly, you can get a free lesson with a 3 channel high winged trainer (yawn). There’s an indoor swimming pool in town, but you have to drive there, so it might be best to just try to sneak into the camping ground and use their pool. The nearest AE Department is 27km away in Ussel, not far from the McDonalds if you get food poisoning from your ‘Le Big Mac’, or the Tiger Mosquitos have drained all your blood.
Once you realise you’re not going to make any finals, you can have a go at the nearby Karting. If you’re really at a loss, you could even do some of These things

What about the racing?
Ok, if we must. There are many fast racers who have a chance if they have a good day, so predicting the winners is a hiding to nothing. So with 0% certainty….
All the H and O classes will be won by Kjell Gunnar Noddeland from Norway or another Norwegian.
In Endurance, the 3.5cc class will be won by Zack Humphries or Sebastien Videmont
The 7.5cc class will be won by Andras Berta or Valentinas Pumputis
The 15cc class will be won by Erich Costa or Chris Hof
The 27cc class will be won by Steven Kindt or Erich Costa
The 35cc class will be won by a member of the Hof family or Ivan Stagnani.

On to the racing on one of, if not the largest course we have ever seen

3.5cc – A big GB entry in this class – Andrew Aykroyd, Tony Ball, Keith Burgess, Mike Broad, Colin Croxford, Robert Daniel, Ian Folkson, Miha Folkson (Jr), Dave Hole, Zack Humphries, Dave Marles, Geoff Parmenter, Richard Sewell, Nigel Smith, Julian Waumsley and Mark Wraight. The small 3.5 engines would have to work hard at full throttle for a long time on the massive course and inevitably there were several mechanical issues, together with a few collisions with buoys and other boats. When the dust settled (Of which there was a lot on the sandy approach to the pits), we had one A final qualifier – Zack Humphries was TQ and three B finalists – Andrew Aykroyd, Robert Daniel and Dave Marles. The top 3 in the B final would progress to the A and there was just the one final for the juniors so Miha was automatically in that one. Unfortunately none of the GB B Final boys were able to progress to the A, a late crash putting paid to Andrew Aykroyds chances whilst leading. . Robert Daniel missed out on 3rd place by an agonising 3 seconds and Dave Marles was plagued with mechanical issues and only completed 4 laps.
Zack took his A game to the final, where he held off Mark van Ieperen of The Netherlands to take an emphatic win with his currently unbeatable Ikarus 2.3 / O.S. 2102. This result also confirms Zack as the 3.5cc 2018 iMBRA Western League Champion, with his closest rivals unable to catch his points total of 55 with only one League Race left in Hannover.

7.5cc – GB competitors were – Andrew Aykroyd, Robert Daniel, Dave Humphries (With his 4.5cc boat), Dave Marles, Geoff Parmenter, Nigel Smith, Julian Waumsley, Ross Waumsley and Mick Szebeko. Again we witnessed a lot of attrition and only Robert Daniel made the A final despite all the brits bar Andrew Aykroyd doing enough laps in qualifying to make to the B final. Dave Humphries was a soul destroying 1 second off the A final with his 4.5cc boat. Just a tiny bit more speed and Dave will be mixing it with the big boys as he is ultra-consistent with this boat. Robert put up a strong fight in the A final but finished in 5th place, 2 laps down on winner Reiner Kaekenmeister of Germany. Geoff Parmenter and Dave Marles provided me some of the best shots of the weekend with these sequences.

15cc – GB competitors were – Mick Buonaiuto, Robert Daniel, Phill Fields, Zack Humphries, Sam Lincoln, Dave Marles, James Taylor and Mark Wraight. Phill and Zack made it to the A final, with Mick, Robert, Sam, James and Mark having to settle for the B final. Dave was not able to make the B final due to more mechanical difficulties. Unfortunately none of our boys managed to progress from the B final with Mark suffering a breakage of his new CMB91 RSEvo DFB whilst in the lead on only it’s 3rd race. Mark was understandably very concerned about a common theme in what is a very expensive engine. We understand the manufacturer is replacing Marks broken parts with ‘New Improved’ parts FOC.

27cc – GB competitors were – Ian Folkson, Dave Marles and James Taylor who all made the final. James had some mechanical issues and finished 5th. Dave unfortunately did not start as he had a catastrophic crash into the bank in the qualification rounds. The whole front of his 27cc boat was ripped apart.

Ian Folkson had his stolen boats back together with his sons electric fun boats and a big box of parts. It was more than 2 years since he’d lost them at this same venue. Who would have thought that the 2 year old 27cc boat would be pressed into action after Ian’s new boat was damaged in qualifying? It would never work after 2 years of sitting in a warehouse would it? Oh yes it did, and propelled Ian to a fantastic 2nd place podium finish.

Juniors – Miha Folkson was the sole GB competitor and from the qualifying rounds it looked like Miha had the speed to win it. Unfortunately it was not to be today and Miha finished 4th after suffering a blown plug. iMBRA World Champion Erich Costa’s son Jonah took the win by 1 lap from Lucas.
