Originally there were 11 boats entered in the 3.5cc class but an early withdrawal, 1st race gremlins causing a DNS and 2 competitors only managing single figures meant there were effectively 7 starters. 4 of these managed over 50 laps with the top 2 being separated by just one lap. I do worry that when the nitro goes to 16% that the people who regularly fail to complete a full race in 3.5cc will struggle even more.

Just one competitor managed a full run in each round – Robert Daniel in round 1 and Dave Pillman in round 2, who had the lake to himself from lap 15 and racked up an unchallenged 64 laps to take an easy win. Not the greatest spectacle when there’s only one boat going round for 75% of the race. I thought I was at a circuit meeting for a minute!

Some good progress made on the noise front which Mick Szebeko acknowledged at the prize giving. Dave Marles was unpleasantly surprised to end up 4 laps adrift of Terry Holmes. We think this may have been down to some missed laps where the transponder float was very close to the racing line. No big trophy today unfortunately Dave. Drew Aykroyd broke an engine and will be getting the crank alignment checked.

A final word

This was only the first race of the season, but the same small group are finishing races with the majority having issues of one sort or another. We must look to prioritise reliability equally to speed.

Only 3 out of the 9 starters managed a full run. Dave Hole continued his good form from Putten with a top score of 52 in the first round. Hot on his heels though were the 2 juniors. Only Daves driving beat Jackson, but Thomas will need a faster boat to trouble the seniors although he did win the second heat outright! The second round was littered with stoppages so nobody improved their placings. Dave puts some daylight between himself and Iain Pickersgill with this win. Only one of these 2 can win the title this year now and it’s likely to hinge on the last race.

Only 4 boats in 7.5 and 3 in 15 so we combined them into one race. Surprisingly, the top 3 were all 7.5s. Mike Gelson was uncharacteristically having bogging issues all day with his 15cc boat although he did enough laps to win that class. Andrew Aykroyd takes the win and it’s now between Andrew and Robert Daniel for the 2022 7.5cc drivers title.

Only 3 entrants in the 15cc which is really poor. Is the writing on the wall for 15cc? Or will the noise issues associated with the 27cc class keep the 15cc in business for some time yet? At Internationals, there are still plenty of 15cc entries.
Everyone seemed to have issues today and nobody did a full run. They all got beat by 7.5s. Not great.

We saw some of the best racing of the day between Andrew Aykroyd and James Taylor before James broke his engine. Oddly none of the 27 scores beat the top 3 of the 7.5s which is very unusual. Andrew edged Dave Marles to take the win. Andrew has the drivers championship wrapped up on 182 points.

The low number of entries is again disappointing, particularly in the 7.5 and 15cc classes. Look at how many we had back in 2009

The first 3.5cc round was split into 2 heats. With the low attendance, this meant one heat of just 4 boats which promised a complete bore-fest and that is exactly what happened. We really have to do everything we can to avoid this as the bad driving and poor mechanical reliability invariably ends up with hardly anyone on the water.
Just one point separates Dave Hole and Iain Pickersgill now at the top of the 3.5 Drivers Championship with Iains win today gaining him 13 points over Dave.

With Andrew Aykroyd leaving his 7.5 at home, Robert Daniel was able to gain back 35 points and jump 25 points clear at the top of the table. Nigel took the win today, 2 laps clear of Robert. Low numbers again meant the racing wasn’t that exciting

It’s been a long time in the making, but Sam Lincoln finally rocked up with his Boudicca 2 after 3 years and promptly proceeded to win the 15cc class, beating Mike Gelson by 2 laps. With this weekend being the last chance to test the new boat in an actual race before the 2022 iMBRA World Championships, Sam was especially pleased that the boat worked well.

Some big crashes in the 15cc races. Certain people need to take a hard look at themselves and completely change their approach. Staying flat out and swerving all over the place instead of throttling is not the right way. I think we should start handing out red cards to repeat offenders. Nobody will want to race with you and that means ultimately you will have nobody to race against.

Andrew Aykroyd crushed the opposition to take the win 12 laps clear of 2nd. James uncharacteristically was having mechanical issues and could only manage 4th today. The 2nd heat was ruined by both Andrew and James being disqualified for noise. There was unfortunately no choice in this as any more noise complaints could spell the end for racing at Peterborough.
Andrew sits 10 points clear at the top of the drivers championship.

A final word

Some shocking standards of driving today resulting in several spectacular crashes. I even saw a couple of drivers racing without their thumb on the throttle, just flat out and swerving all over the place to avoid the rescue and other boats. There are no beginners here. Everyone has been at this for a few seasons and this is simply not acceptable. There are reasons our top racers are attending UK events less and less and the appalling driving is the main one. This, along with the time and cost of sustaining major damage to a £1000+ boat is stopping new entrants to the hobby. Come on people. Calm yourselves and use the left stick. There will always be accidents by the very nature of this hobby but we have to improve the basic driving.

The other thing is noise. There are always busybodies around who will complain about something. Noise is one of them. I don’t care how loud something is and I wouldn’t care even if a race was held next door to my house as long as it wasn’t every weekend. Nothing else to say really. You can read This

Originally we had 13 entrants, but with a late withdrawal and a simply rude no-show, we combined the split into a single 11 boat race. This didn’t make a lot of difference as the usual mechanical unreliability or bad driving soon whittled this down into fairly pedestrian rounds. Very unusual not to see Zack on the podium but experimenting with new settings today meant no full runs.
Dave Hole took the overall win by 1 lap from Ian Pickersgill with Grahame Morgan completing the podium. Good to see another driver getting some consistency in finishing.

Thomas made his first Multi start of the year and edged Jackson for top junior but having missed 4 races is still way behind in the Junior Championship

Best racing of the day saw James Taylor take the overall win from Dave Marles and Mick Pain.
Andrew Aykroyd retains his lead in the 27 Drivers Championship. Despite only a 4th place today, the new T8 ran very well for its 1st outing and Andrew has now been able to sell the 7.4 knowing he has a great replacement.
On a personal note, this crash between Dave Pillman and Dave Marles is one of the best action sequences I’ve ever captured. The 6th photo, and the one featured at the top of this page is as good as any professional could achieve 😉

A final word

Sorry for the short report, not enough time with work commitments.
I’m still in 2 minds whether the Saturday Multi / Sunday Circuit is a better format, but I was going to both days regardless as it’s not too far for me to travel.
Endurance (Multi) racing in the UK continues to be plagued by mechanical failures or poor driving. The default tendency to use the right-stick to swerve instead of the left (throttle) by several competitors causes crashes and DNFs. All the time. Whilst that might be good for me as a photographer, it does little for the quality of competition when 3 boats out of 11 are left running after the first 5 minutes. To parrot an old cliche – To Finish first, first you have to finish.

The Brits suffered mixed fortunes. Zack Humphries continued his winning streak with 1st place in 3.5cc after an incredible battle with Sebastien Videmont of France. He wasn’t unfortunately able to repeat the same heroics in the 15cc after a spin put paid to his chances. Fellow Brit Robert Daniel made the 3.5cc A final and finished 8th. Robert unluckily missed out on the 7.5cc A final after a penalty and transponder issues. David Humphries took a respectable 5th place in the 7.5cc A Final with the first race of his CMB 45 M-Line powered Drakkon. Dave Marles and Phill Fields were both out of luck this weekend.

A decent 6 boat entry, with the top 3 all scoring in the 60’s. A few coming-togethers and some tight racing saw Iain Pickersgill take his first win. Iain has bought a great boat in Phills International podium-placing Falcon and we expect many more podiums to come. Dean Lord had a new Ikarus after his old one sank to the depths at Peterborough and just managed to edge Jackson for 2nd place, both finishing on exactly 60 laps apiece.
All change in the 3.5 Drivers Championship with Iains win catapulting him to the top of the table. Jackson keeps his 3rd place spot against all the seniors. Not much luck for Dave Hole today, a 1st lap crash took out his coupling in the 1st heat and a DNF in heat 2 puts a dent in his NDC lead. (DH still leads the NDC when you exclude junior results)

Just 3 boats in the 7.5cc class this week so we combined the 7.5c and 15cc heats. This worked really well, with plenty of dramatic racing which you don’t see so much on bigger lakes with bigger runoffs. Dave Marles 1st round score of 83 with his Drakkon was 10 more than the best 15cc boat! Andrew Aykroyd’s 2nd place finish cuts Robert’s lead in the drivers championship to 5 points. Not such a good day for Robert but 3rd place is still a decent points haul. It’s quite often the way when you’re trying to do the organising and racing at the same time.

Now some people might complain about the ‘compact’ nature of Bridlington lake, using it as an excuse for not coming, but they have probably never been here in the first place. It makes for properly intense racing. James’ hard-charging driving is really spectacular to watch and is a days entertainment all on it’s own. Mike Gelson took the overall 15cc win, keeping himself out of trouble and staying on the water for a total of 73 in the combined 7.5+15 class. James jumps to the top of the NDC with both Mike and Vlad also displacing Terry who slips to 4th having missed this event.

Some really close high speed dicing between James Taylor and Andrew Aykroyd was great to watch. I can honestly say I enjoyed watching todays racing more than any recent UK event. You will often hear me lamenting the attrition in UK races where a starting field of 8 or more is reduced to 3 boats after the 1st 5 minutes. Well here, that’s not a problem. No sooner than one boat has passed another, they are back on their tail after 2 or 3 laps! Andrew took the overall win today with an outstanding 100 laps in the 20 minutes, which left both a big dent in his throttle thumb and the hopes of his rivals – That’s maximum points from 2 races!. Mick Pain took 2nd, 18 laps adrift.

A final word

I live in North London. yes it’s a long way to Bridlington. I have been as guilty as any of using the distance as an excuse not to attend this event in the past. That has been a mistake. And you know what, it’s not really a long way at all when there’s more than one of you in the car.
Get in your cars, book a b&b and get up here. The smallish lake is actually just as good if not better than other venues as even with the usual attrition, the racing is still intense with fewer boats going round. And you never know, it may teach you to drive better.
On top of that, you won’t find much better facilities anywhere in the country.
We had a great time, but it was a last minute decision to go for us. Wish we had gone up earlier and made a proper weekend of it.
Do yourself a favour, plan ahead and make sure you get to the next race at this venue.
I’m still hoping one day James will smile in a podium photo 😉

A decent 7 boat entry, but unreliability again was the key contributing factor. Endurance races are only 20 minutes long and with a large lake with big run-off areas, there really isn’t much excuse for not being able to finish a race. But it happens all the time. Perhaps rather than relentlessly pursuing those extra few km/h, racers would be better off concentrating on doing a full 20 mins. With this strategy, you would get a podium every time! (Well in the UK anyway).

Overall 3.5cc winner Robert Daniel put in a full run and 57 laps with his new Ikarus 3. The boat is looking really fast and stable and could be finals material in Poland. Dave Hole’s 35 points keeps him in the lead of the drivers championship, 13 points clear of Robert.

But the star of the show today was 11 year-old Jackson Aykroyd, winning his 1st race beating all the seniors in round 2 with a full run and some excellent buoy to buoy driving. Several of the seniors commented that you wouldn’t know he was a junior judging by his driving under pressure. Bravo.

Unfortunately the 7.5cc class was poorly subscribed this week with only 3 competitors, none of whom managed a full run. Unusually though, 1st and 2nd ended up with the same 32 laps, separated only by seconds. Robert Daniel narrowly took the overall win from Andrew Aykroyd. Both were running Prestwich Drakkons. A 2nd in Peterborough and a win today jumps Robert into the lead of the NDC with Andrew 2nd 13 points behind.

As the only one with a full run, Terry Holmes took a comfortable win from Vlad Getov in 2nd. Good to see Vlad on the podium and enjoying his racing after falling victim to a despicable theft at Peterborough last month. The win puts Terry joint top of the NDC with Nigel on 62 points.

The best racing of the day saw everyones laps in the 60s. With Andrew Aykroyd edging 1.5 laps clear at the end, we we treated to a real cat and mouse battle between Mick Pain and Terry Holmes for 2nd place. Mick has found some real pace this year with his 27. Mick and Terry swapped places 3 times in an absorbing race-long battle. If only every race were like this! With no NDC points awarded at Peterborough due to the noise issues, Andrew’s win puts him top with 40 points.

With Stuttgart cancelled due to weather warnings, Nigel Smith made the last-minute trip up to Colwick. Would have been nice to see a few others do the same. New lakes don’t come along too often.

Unsung hero of the day – James Taylor who despite just about recovering from Covid in time, made the 170 mile 7 hour round trip to bring the transponder gear, himself and Vlad to the event. Basically, we could not have run the event without James’ selfless support. We can therefore forgive him for the very rare occurrence of him not dominating the 15cc and 27cc classes!

Last but not least Jackson Aykroyd – When you’re this good at 11, we don’t really need to run a separate junior championship. I’ve added a separate Combined NDC table and he’s currently 3rd! Dad’s work commitments unfortunately mean he won’t be able to make Poland 2022 but hopefully we’ll see him part of the GB Team in future.

A decent 11 boat entry allowed us to run a full heat which is always preferable due to attrition. However it seemed the rust had set in over the winter and unreliability and crashing as usual determined the outcome of the 3.5cc class.
Dave Hole was the only competitor to put in a full heat and easily took the overall win, 10 laps clear of 2nd place.
Disaster struck for Dean Lord near the end of the 2nd heat where a huge crash with Iain Pickersgill holed his Ikarus and it very quickly sank to the bottom of the lake. An attempt will be made to recover the boat using scuba divers, but at the moment the outlook is pessimistic.

As with the 3.5, just one competitor – Geoff Parmenter managed to put in a full run which gave him the win over 2nd placed Robert Daniel. We saw a good battle between Geoff and Robert whose new Drakkon was going really well in it first outing. Unfortunately Robert seemed to take issue with top right buoy more than once which put him out of the running for the win.

James Taylor dominated the 15cc class, finishing 12 laps clear of 2nd placed Nigel Smith. Nigel did actually do a full run but James consistently low laptimes averaging nearly 3 seconds a lap quicker than anyone else, made him untouchable.
There was a good battle between Nigel and Mark Wraight, but Mark uncharacteristically chose to back out of anything too risky and his Seljak Stealth will live to fight another day after fuel feed issues put paid to any chances of 2nd place.

Introduction

This report has been compiled in order to proactively respond to the current noise problems we now all face when running R/C Multi boats

This report highlights the work which has been carried out by Peterborough Model Powerboat Club (PMPBC). This can also assist other clubs who run multi boats of all classes to combat any noise problems they may have.

Historic usage of Osier Lake, Peterborough

PMPBC have historically operated radio-controlled multi boats both in Nene Park and subsequently at Osier Lake since August 1980
These readings were taken several years ago and at that time there was not deemed to be a problem, Since then, modern boats are now much faster, with high output glow and now petrol engines being used, and the general use of Carbon Fibre in the manufacture of the boat hulls. All of these factors contribute to the higher noise now being generated by multi boats.
To this end PMPBC took it upon themselves to carry out noise tests to determine the current noise levels

Testing methodology.

A calibrated tripod mounted noise test meter was installed at 1250mm above the water level and at a distance of 10 Metres from the path the test boats will take in accordance with MPBA recommendations, Multiple noise readings were taken using the Slow setting, db(A) and with the test boats at 90 deg to the noise meter.
The initial test results were disappointing and are as follows:
3.5cc- Typically in the region of 84-884B(A)
7.5cc- Typically in the region of 83-894B(A)
Some boats were slightly quieter, and some were noisier with the above readings being typical. It was also found that the loudest tuned pipes were the CMB and Nova Rossi pipes manufactured from Aluminium with PMB steel pipe being the quietest

General comments

As can be seen from the above readings the noise levels can be reduced down to an acceptable level with some fairly minor modifications being made to the boats.

General

Hard Male / Female rubbers and Female / Female gearbox rubber bobbins were found to transmit a lot of vibration and hence noise into the hull,
Soft (Shore 45) Male / Male gearbox rubber bobbins transmitted considerably less vibration and hence noise into the hull
PMB steel pipe found to be quieter than CMB and Nova Rossi by 1-dB(A).
The 3.5cc boats were of different design and construction, ranging from gel-coat Carbon Fibre to full Carbon Fibre,
There was no noticeable difference in the noise readings between coupling and solid shaft boats
There was a 2-44B(A) increase in the noise level when running, without an engine cover

Conclusions

installing multiple Carbon fibre bracing ribs between the bottom of the hull and the top deck will reduce the vibration and hence noise from the tank cover.
1. CF bracing on the tank cover
2. Install soft (Shore 45) rubber bobbins which will transmit less vibration and hence noise into the boat. Install additional securing screws to the tank cover to reduce vibration.
3. Fit an engine cover.
4. Fit a PMB steel pipe
Installing lengths of thick wall rubber tube into the gap between the tops of the tank’s and the top deck will reduce the vibration and hence nose into the top of the hull and tank cover.
To get the ultimate in noise reduction, fully foam the inside of the boat

Prestwich Models

If you can’t beat’em, join’em. Phill Fields sold his International podium-placing Falcon II and rocked up with a brand new Prestwich Ikarus 3 with a CMB Beta Evo. This was enough to edge out Robert Daniel by 2 laps to take the overall win. The new Ikarus looked very stable and Phill had it well trimmed and we will see if he can give Zack Humphries a run for his money when they next meet in competition. The CMB is probably acknowledged as the most powerful of the 3.5cc engines, notwithstanding its less than stellar reliability.

A special mention must go to new junior Jackson Aykroyd who beat 2 seniors in his first ever race and drove exceptionally well with excellent lines between the buoys. Equally important was his apparent lack of nerves.

Well you can’t get much closer than that! The 7.5cc class was decided by a difference of just over 4 seconds! Robert Daniel just edges out Martin Fields. It was good to see all the work Martin has put in on the Jekyll finally bearing fruit.
Unbelievably, the gap between 3rd and 4th was only 6 seconds, Mick Fields just edging out Andrew Aykroyd for the last podium place. Mick was running his International Podium placing Jekyll 1.
New racer Edvards Kazibrodskis has a good turn of speed with his 8-Ball but suffered reliability issues today.

Phill Fields debuted his Prestwich T8, just released on the Prestwich Website. Phill’s last Tornado had earned him a lot of International success including This Win in Putten. One slightly unusual thing on Phills boat was the adoption of external control linkages for the trim tabs – Something you see more often at Internationals.
Well what can you say? I don’t think I’ve seen a more perfect race debut – The T8 was flying and perfectly trimmed and easily took the win, the overall fastest lap and the highest laps of the day. The only mishap was an unfortunate non-fault crash with another competitor who only scored a single lap and then had it taken away with a penalty. It is frustrating when there is such a gulf in driving standards which is then exacerbated by the small courses in the UK.

Dave Marles put up a good showing and there was a decent battle with Phill for a few laps. Terry Holmes rounded off the podium.

The costs involved in running a 15cc boat have meant a steady increase in 27cc competitors. There are reports that engine manufacturers are at work designing smaller capacity petrol motors. We will see how this pans out despite Nitro restrictions still being inconsistent across Europe.
So this is the one I was waiting for as there were 2 new ultra-competitive entrants to the 27cc class in Dave Pillman and Andrew Aykroyd. Their battles in 7.5cc have been Legendary lol. Unfortunately though, Mr Pillman scuppered any chance of a repeat battle by breaking his ignition before the event had even started!
So one boat down, we were hoping for the best and luckily got it. An epic battle between James Taylor and Andrew Aykroyd resulted in James edging it by a single lap. Andrew had run the whole race on this broken prop after dad John accidentally caught it on the stand at the start (We’ve all done that!). Andrew also bogged and lost at least a lap with a few minutes to go so those 2 incidents almost certainly cost him the win . Looking forward to more of this in the coming months.

Mick Pain has a new turn of speed with his Seljak Stealth and could be fighting for wins, albeit if he can add a bit of aggression.
