I was looking forward to the first clash between Phill Fields with his new Ikarus 3 and Zack Humphries (Current European and World 3.5cc champion). This produced some excellent close racing. Phill took the overall win with Zack uncharacteristically stopping in both rounds with suspected water ingress to the engine bay. A shock 2 defeats in a row in 3.5cc for Zack after the Masters. And a 100% 2 out of 2 for Phill with his Ikarus 3

The one worth waiting for? Not really. The poor standard in the UK continues with repeated attrition leaving just a couple of boats on the water. This is not real competition and the racers need to take a long hard look at themselves. The big money spent in this class seems a bit of a waste when you can’t even get two laps into the race without breaking down. Very disappointing.

The traditional joint Multi and Circuit event took place at Elmbridge Model Boat Club at the weekend. With 2 course changes from M to Oval and back again and reconfiguring the lap counting system, there was a lot to get through over the 2 days.

We began with a minutes silence to remember Chas Tedder and John Whitaker, both taken far too soon and huge contributors to their clubs and the hobby in general. RIP Chas and John.

34 Multi entries was remarkably only 3 down on the 2019 entry, 2 due to unforeseen illness and one who booked in and just didn’t show up or tell anyone they weren’t coming. It is especially frustrating when that happens as it takes people to run these events and allocated jobs are not filled. You know who you are, but don’t lose sleep over it as we had a great event despite your no-show.

To run a single 12 boat heat, you need 29 people available – The competitors and their mechanics, 3 judges and 2 doing the lapcounting. We were desperately trying to run as one race, but this didn’t seem possible without knowing exactly who would be available on Day 1. So, we split the 1st round into 2 heats. Predictably, with the usual attrition, this produced unremarkable racing. At the end of Day 1, Julian led from Dave Hole and Grahame Morgan.
Having endured this on Day 1, and with good spectator attendance, we decided there were enough bodies to run a single heat on Day 2. This was a great decision, resulting in one of the best races I’ve seen for ages. There were some individual stoppages, but for the most part we had 9 boats on the water throughout the race.
Current World and European 3.5 Champion Zack Humphries suffered a disastrous start, stopping at the first buoy and losing several laps whilst his boat was recovered by the rescue team. This proved decisive in the final result which saw the top 3 all within one lap. Jackson Aykroyd was putting on another astonishing display in his 1st season and was desperately unlucky to stop a few times after being swamped by wash. Make him an engine cover dad!

Having set a decent score in round 1 where nobody else did a full race, Andrew Aykroyd was in pole position for day 2. However, a very strong drive by Geoff Parmenter saw him clock up an outstanding 66 laps – Only 2 less than Zacks 15cc score. Geoff takes the win from Andrew with MPBA Chairman Mick Fields 3rd.

The 15cc class saw the lowest number of entrants. The economics of 15cc are clearly being felt with a very noticeable shift towards the 27cc class.
A few incidents where pit men may have been guilty of watching the race and not what was in front of their driver, made life more exciting than necessary for the rescue crew.
A fairly comfortable win for Zack Humphries peppered with a few scares courtesy of Vlads malfunctioning rudder servo!

With nobody doing a full race in round 1, the winner was almost certainly coming from round 2 – Only Mike Broad and Terry Holmes managed to keep going for the whole race in the end. Mike takes the win by 2 laps from Terry.

Good to finally see a 3.5 Hydro run as there were not enough entrants to run this class at the last Circuit race. Hopefully we’ll see some more competitors in the future as racers will want to get in some practice before iMBRA 2022.

A new competitor entered the fray in the shape of Andrew Aykroyd having bought Gary Wraights old 7.5 (Winning) hydro off Derek Owen. Not a bad debut with only one mishap where it was difficult to see Martins stopped boat. Luckily the only damage was to sever the water pickup tube.

A final word
Another great joint event. Numbers not yet back to pre-Covid levels but nonetheless a decent turnout and some great racing.
It’s a lot of extra organisational work changing the course around halfway through the day, but it’s worth doing. The joint event means competitors / spectators from both disciplines are in attendance and this can only be a good thing for the social scene and the club economics. One problem that was mentioned to me is that apart from Hydro where points are awarded, the size of the course can have a significant impact, especially in 20 or 30 minute endurance races. If the course is a different size on each day, then a smaller course would (obviously) allow racers to clock up more laps. Something to think about…

The traditional joint Multi and Circuit event took place at Elmbridge Model Boat Club at the weekend. With 80 boats entered – 37 Multi and 43 Circuit plus 2 course changes from M to Oval and back again and reconfiguring the lap counting system, there was a lot to get through over the 2 days.
An unfortunate clash with an iMBRA League event in France meant a few of the multi lads were missing in action, but they made up for their no-show by getting a 1-2 finish in the 3.5cc class in Therdonne. Anyway, we were only 1 down on last year in multi and 5 up in Circuit, so the international clash didn’t harm our event in real terms.

Once again, our thanks go to the guys at Elmbridge for hosting this event, and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly facilitating the running of the meeting and those who provided a constant supply of hot food and and cold drinks throughout the weekend.

Multi Secretary Andrew Aykroyd again sourced some excellent trophies and long-suffering Dave Pillman turned it on for the 2nd year in a row with a win in the 7.5cc class. This also being the 5th Multi round, we could see who’s in pole position for that coveted spot in the MPBA Team for Gonzaga 2020.

We decided to go with a busy single 12 boat heat for 3.5cc as attrition in recent races where the 3.5 has been split has often ended up with just a few boats running. A masterclass from Keith Burgess saw him take the win by 6 laps over Dave Hole in 2nd and the very fast but erratic Chris Alder in 3rd. Keith is showing a lot more reliability than usual and this win lifts him to 2nd in the Drivers Championship, just 9 points behind leader Dave Hole. Keith must be after the team spot! We get an extra place in 3.5cc at the Worlds thanks to Zack Humphries gold medal in France 2018. Interestingly, only 3 boats in round 1 and 1 boat in round 2 did the full 20 mins. That’s quite poor really and the general reliability levels could do with improving.

The closest racing of the weekend saw Dave Pillman edge out Julian Waumsley by a single lap. Dave had his Pegasus Evo on song and was determined not to suffer another DNF after being mercilessly taunted for recent performances. Dave shut up his critics by taking the 7.5cc Masters title 2 years in a row. We know Dave wasn’t being his usual ‘Flat-out-damn-the-consequences’ self, as he did not set the fastest lap. This went to Julian in Round 1.
Robert Daniel kept up his consistent form in 3rd place and is looking increasingly sure of the 7.5cc GB Team spot for Gonzaga 2020.

One to forget for James Taylor as reliability issues in both heats put paid to his 100% record in 2019. James still leads the Championship by a massive 78 points and one more win will seal his qualifying spot for Gonzaga 2020.
The 15cc class was generally quite low-scoring, with the winning total laps being less than the winners in both the 3.5cc and 7.5cc classes. However, the winning margin was quite tight and we were not sure whether Mike Holliday or Dave Williams would win it. In the end, a good result for Mike with his new Seljak boat.

Ian Folkson took an emotional win in his last U.K. race before emigrating to Slovenia next month. Ian is a MPBA Life Member and has previously served as MPBA Chairman as well as being the current iMBRA President. Ian has sat out most of the domestic season this year to help his 2 sons in the Junior Classes, but he produced 2 faultless runs to take what in the end was a comfortable win. More woe for James Taylor with motor issues and another 100% record was brought to an abrupt halt. Big picture terms, James has a pretty unassailable lead in the Championship and the qualifying spot is nearly in the bag.
Fastest lap went to James in round 2 with a scorching sub 16 second lap.

Keith Burgess knows what he’s doing with a 3.5 engine and dominated the 3.5cc hydro class as he did in the multi. This win edges him closer to Phill Fields in the Championship while Phill was away in Therdonne. Dave Pillman gets a 3rd place trophy just for turning up without a boat!

3.5cc – 2018 champion Dave Hole

The 3.5cc class offers the most competition, with several potential winners. If he has the motivation for 2019, then 2017 3.5 NDC winner Mark Wraight is both fast and reliable. Alongside Mark, we would consider 2018 Champion Dave Hole, Andrew Aykroyd and Dave Pillman, who has a brand new ultra-light Ikarus 2.3 which will undoubtedly be very fast, but will it be reliable?. We’d probably make Andrew the favourite this time if he goes to most of the meetings. We have also heard that Phill Fields has a 3.5 boat for 2019, but he’ll probably stick to the Internationals and maybe the 2 big domestic events. Battle for the King of Speed will probably be fought out between Dave Marles and Dave Pillman, but as usual, those last few km/h of speed usually come at the expense of occasional reliability issues. Last year, only 1 driver (Zack Humphries) managed to win more than one race.

Dave Pillman will be desparate to atone for the disastrous 1-point Championship loss to Andrew Aykroyd in the final race last year. Dave knows the Championship was his for the taking with one of the best 7.5 boats we’ve seen for years, right up there with Dave Marles own Pegasus. If only Dave could match his speed with race strategy! We expect the 2019 title to be fought out between Andrew and Dave.

15cc – 2018 champion James Taylor

James Taylor may have done a clean sweep in 2018 in 15cc and 27cc, but that was less important to him than the 2018 World Championships where he came away disappointed feeling he hadn’t performed to his full capabilities. We’d normally say James was nailed-on for another 15cc title in 2019, but he is intending to do a lot of internationals so this may let in other drivers. Mark Wraight will be looking to rack up some wins with his Seljak design 15cc boat, if he can contain the red-mist that descends on him in 15cc, but stangely not in 3.5cc. Paul Adams is very fast now and could trouble the top 2.

27cc – 2018 champion James Taylor

27cc would be another win for James Taylor if he does enough races. The other contenders would be Paul Adams and Mick Pain who is ultra reliable, but not quite on the pace. Last year, James led the Championship from round 3 and was not troubled for the rest of the season.

The post 2018 Season Preview first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.]]> Looking ahead to the 2018 multi season, we have a lot to look forward to. There are the iMBRA League races in Gonzaga, Stuttgart, Haarlem and Hannover, plus a potential 2nd international in Holland at a new venue. The highlight of the season is of course the 2018 iMBRA World Championships in Egletons, France starting at the end of July where we have a strong MPBA team with every chance of being in the medals.

Also running throughout the season is the MPBA National Drivers Championship with a new (Old) venue at Bridlington which should be exciting for the 15 and 27cc boats being let’s say ‘Rather Compact’ as lakes go..
So who’s going to win what? To win the MPBA UK National Drivers Championship you need to attend all the races and be consistent. It’s no good being the fastest boat on the water if you have reliability issues. In F1, Keke Rosberg (Father of Nico) famously only won one race in his championship winning season in 1982 with Williams, but he racked up a lot of points with consistent finishing. This could be the year of the underdog, with many of the top racers wary of damage or breakages leading up to the world championships

3.5cc – 2017 champion Mark Wraight

In the 3.5cc class, 2017 iMBRA European Champion Zack Humphries is untouchable, but the NDC is not his priority – He has eyes on bigger prizes at international level. 2017 3.5 NDC winner Mark Wraight is both fast and reliable, but he is also in the world championships team which may open the door for others if he doesn’t attend all the races. Alongside Mark, we would consider Dave Hole, Geoff Parmenter and Andrew Aykroyd in with a shout and we haven’t yet seen the best of Ian Folksons Ikarus. We’d probably make Dave the favourite but Andrew can win it if he goes to most of the meetings. Battle for the King of Speed will probably be fought out between Dave Marles and Dave Pillman, but we suspect neither of them will do enough events to win the title and those last few km/h of speed usually come at the expense of occasional reliability issues. Keith Burgess also has great speed but has been thwarted by reliability in recent seasons.

7.5cc – 2017 champion Mick Szebeko

The 7.5 should be interesting this season as we have another top racer in Andrew Aykroyd joining the class. Gary Wraight will be looking to return to the podium with his 8 Ball after extensive modifications. Gary will be determined to make 2018 a success after scuppering his chances of the 2017 title by attempting major changes mid-season only for it to backfire spectacularly. Everyone is looking forward to the first glimpse of 2014 World Champion Martin Fields new self-designed 7.5. Martin will be hoping the new boat is as good or better than his superb Pegasus Evo that he sold after the GB International win. Martin will no doubt putting most effort into the internationals so he’s not really a UK title contender. In no particular order, we would say that Mick Szebeko, Gary Wraight and Andrew Aykroyd are the front runners. Julian and Ross Waumsley are also strong in 7.5 and Julian’s average of 26 points per race would have been enough to take the title last year had he competed in every event. Ross may be looking for some wins to make up for the disappointment of missing the eliminators having contracted a serious infection in 2017 which almost cost him his leg.Dave Pillmans new Pegasus Evo may give everyone a fright (Video), but will he do enough races?

15cc – 2017 champion Terry Holmes

The best 15cc boat in the UK is Phill Fields Tornado T7, but like other top racers he will be considering potential damage in a world championship year so Mark Wraight will be looking to put right the disappointment of missing out on an 8th title in 2017. Facebook users will have seen the progress of his all-new Seljak design 15cc boat. We will shortly bring you a build masterclass of this boat. However, we hear he may have to contend with James Taylor who is rumoured to be returning to the 15cc class with a new Tornado T7. James is arguably (With Zack) the best driver in the UK, so Mark will have his hands full if James gets his boat built. James/Mark 2017 champion Terry Holmes will also be a strong contender as he only had one DNF all season last year on his way to the title. 2015/2016 champion Sam Lincoln would normally be considered one of the favourites, but is almost certainly focused on the world championships. We would also back Mikey Hillstead if he can keep the consistency he showed in the latter part of 2017.

27cc – 2017 champion James Taylor

27cc is a straight fight between Ian Folkson and James Taylor in our eyes. Or CMB vs Tiger King! James average 35 points per race in last years championship was simply phenomenal and if he carries that form into 2018 he will be unstoppable. The other contenders would be Steve Baxter and Mick Pain who is ultra reliable, but not on the pace of Ian, James and Steve. All 4 are qualified for the world championships, so this may let in Terry Holmes.

The post Endurance Season Finale first appeared on Model Power Boat Association.]]> The Endurance (Multi) season traditionally ends with the ‘Prestwich Classic’, a single 30 minute race for each class run under a handicap system, with the top 3 lap scorers winning a cash prize sponsored by Dave Marles of Prestwich Models.
The event also determined the final standings in the MPBA Endurance National Drivers Championship

3.5cc – With 2017 3.5cc Champion Mark Wraight electing to sit the event out to save wear and tear on his boat for 2018, Andrew Aykroyd took the win with an impressive 93 laps from Dave Hole and Robert Daniel. Andrew finally seemed to have solved this seasons reliability issues by fitting a new float and catch tank and his Ikarus 2.3 did not miss a beat. Andrew also took 3rd highest laps of the day. 7.5cc – Following his incredible performance at the GB Team Eliminators, race sponsor Dave Marles takes the win and highest laps of the day adjusted fro the handicap from Robert Daniel and Steve Clements. Dave elected to give half the cash prize to his pit-man Dean Lord and half to the 3rd highest lap scorer. Mick Szebeko finishes off the podium in 4th, but takes the 7.5cc drivers title with consistent finishes throught the season [Click images to enlarge]







15cc – Disaster for double-chasing Mark Wraight who just needed a start to take the title. He broke the engine in his borrowed sons boat in practice, allowing Terry Holmes to sweep to victory and snatch the title in a 4 boat 15cc race. Terry was as pleased as punch to take his first title and Mark was kicking himself over what could have been a record-equalling title haul. Dave Marles and Paul Adams took 2nd and 3rd respectively. 27cc – James Taylor in a super performance – Race Winner. 27cc Drivers Title. Since giving up the 15cc class to concentrate on 27cc, James has been unstoppable and cruises to victory with an incredible 105 laps, leapfrogging Mick Pain to snatch the 2017 27cc drivers title. James now holds the GB record of 8 National Drivers Titles in all classes. Ian Folkson takes 2nd a Steve Baxter 3rd.[Click images to enlarge]







3.5cc Junior – Thomas takes the win today and Miha wins the Junior Drivers Title. It’s been neck and neck all year with these 2 young racers and we expect they’ll be beating the seniors very soon![Click images to enlarge]
